Joint Statement of the Co-Conveners of the Leadership Council: June 2015
The New Alliance and Grow Africa Leadership Council (annual) meeting took place on June 3, 2015, on the margins of the Grow Africa Investment Forum. Held in South Africa this year, the meeting was led by co-conveners Erastus Mwencha, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and Sarita Nayyar, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum USA. The Joint Statement of the Co-Conveners was issued within one week of the meeting, and is available below (266kb, pdf).
The CEO of the Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU) issued this statement following the meeting:
“As CEO of SACAU and on behalf of the President of SACAU, Dr. Theo De Jager, I ensure the voice and interests of southern Africa’s farmers are represented at the Leadership Council of the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition. Southern Africa’s farmers, large and small, will only increase their productivity and profitability when they are effectively linked to markets. The investments catalysed by the New Alliance show great promise and are already reaching millions of smallholders with new services, sourcing and training. However, more work is needed to ensure the voice of farmers are heard by policy-makers in each country, and to protect them from any risks of exploitative practices by governments or business. Nonetheless, the New Alliance represents an opportunity for farmers, business, government and donors to undertake this vital work together, and to deliver an inclusive transformation of African agriculture as defined by last year's Malabo Declaration from African Heads of State.” - Ishmael Sunga
The Leadership Council will hold its next annual meeting in May 2016.
As a reminder, the Leadership Council Terms of Reference, which detail the purpose of the Council, its composition, when it will meet, when communication will be issued, etc., are also housed on the New Alliance site and can be accessed directly here.
